the making skill of huizhou ink is a traditional handmade craft in southeast china’s anhui province, which is distributed in jixi county, shexian county and huangshan’s tunxi district. in may 2006, this traditional skill was listed in the first group of national intangible cultural heritage project. according to available historical materials, huizhou ink industry started from the southern tang dynasty and reached its peak in the song dynasty. because of the raw materials and climates, huizhou has always been the center of the ink industry. 
there are two essential raw materials for ink production, one is pine-soot ink via burning pine tree branches, and another one is soot ink by burning wood oil. the process of making huizhou ink is complicated, it includes soot burning, soot selection, glue adding, pestling, moulding, squeezing, drying, trimming, polishing, gold drawing, packaging and other procedures.
