on february 5th, volkswagen group (china) announced that the new volkswagen-branded vehicle developed in collaboration with xiaopeng motors (xpeng) will start production in hefei in 2026. volkswagen and xpeng reached an agreement in mid-2023 to jointly develop two electric vehicle models under the volkswagen brand for the chinese midsize car market. as part of this collaboration, volkswagen group invested $700 million in xpeng and acquired a 4.99% stake in the company. 
previously, volkswagen had announced its collaboration with xpeng in the field of new vehicle development, with volkswagen china technology co., ltd. (vctc) in hefei taking the lead. in this latest announcement, volkswagen specifically stated that the production of the relevant vehicle models will also in hefei, further strengthening volkswagen's research, development, and production layout in the city. this further highlights the significance of anhui and hefei in volkswagen group's global strategy. volkswagen has already established an efficient and intelligent connected car industry cluster in hefei, which includes volkswagen china technology co., ltd. (vctc), volkswagen anhui (vwa) factory, and volkswagen (anhui) components co., ltd. (vwac). therefore, hefei is rapidly becoming an important engine for innovation and development for volkswagen group in china, as well as a hub for global key technology cooperation within the group.
