this year marks the 50th anniversary of china-spain diplomatic relations. on november 4, "the wind comes from china" - "fang jinlong and his friends" chinese traditional concert was specially selected as one of the commemorative activities for the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries. it was held in the hometown of spanish great musician falla, granada city, at the falla concert hall.
in addition to the old friends who came with the tour from china, including zhang weina, founder of anqing jingxin guqin house, vice president of anhui guqin society, guqin performer; zhang yu, fourth generation of tianjin intangible cultural instrument zhang, inheritor of ancient folk musical instrument making technology; wang chengyi, head of paris chinese music chamber orchestra and dulcimer performer; and xiaoli, a guitarist living in spain, mr. fang also joined hands with new friends such as the san sebastian badu wind orchestra, which was the only band from granada that had toured china before, and the chinese silk and bamboo orchestra composed of hispanics, which had just returned from their performance in china.
early yesterday morning, victor federer, conductor of the san sebastian badu wind orchestra, came to the hotel to meet mr. fang jinlong and expressed his feelings for china and expectations for the concert. luwen, head of the silk and bamboo orchestra, who can play a variety of chinese instruments and speak fluent mandarin, had already gone to the confucius institute of the university of granada the night before to listen to mr. fang's lecture in its entirety.
the same love for chinese music and feelings towards china soon turned the new friends into good ones, laying a foundation of tacit understanding for their collaboration.
at 7:30 p.m., the concert officially opened and the falla concert hall, which can accommodate more than 700 people, was filled with audiences. wang chengyi used a solo dulcimer performance of "embroidered lotus bag" to catch the grand narrative opening of the "granada" by the wind orchestra. mr. fang used the profound cultural heritage of china's nine thousand years in "millennium echoes" to create another distant artistic conception with the guqin. the freedom of "drunkenness" brought out the leisurely and contented mood of zhang yu's "wild goose fell on the sand". it ushered in the nobility of "plum blossom three plays" by zhang weina and mr. fang, and then faded into the indifference of zhang yu's "empty bell".
fang jinlong, who is determined to promote the wuxian pipa, once again demonstrated his "versatile" ability to reproduce his treasured musical instrument with a lecture-performance. then he played "evening song of fishing boat" on a wuxian pipa and performed "memories of alhambra palace" with a guitar, pushing the concert to its climax. next, luwen led the silk and bamboo orchestra and performed three pieces in succession with chinese instruments, even demonstrating the xoomei technique. 
in the finale, mr. fang jinlong and the san sebastian badu wind orchestra presented "a moonlit night on the spring river" to the audience. the majestic background of the wind music, which had been rehearsed throughout the day, was tuned by mr. fang to create a chinese landscape painting-like charm. after the song ended, there was silence all around, and then applause and cheers erupted like thunder. mr. fang jinlong came to spain for a visit and performance at the age of 18 in 1980. for more than four decades, he has been using the musical language of china all over the world to convey the beautiful wishes of the chinese people for peace and friendship. this concert is another wonderful stop on this musician's journey around the world.
