strolling through the main urban area of ma'anshan city, anhui province, you can often see large "bonsais" nestled at school entrances, in front of residential buildings, and along the roadsides. these "bonsais" showcase vibrant green landscapes, well-designed spatial layouts, convenient public facilities, and a subtle integration of culture... these "bonsais" are pocket parks affectionately known as "ma xiaobai" by the local residents. they are gradually spreading across ma'anshan, continuously enhancing the city's aesthetics, quality, and the happiness and satisfaction of its citizens. as pocket parks, typically ranging from 400 to 10,000 square meters, they are usually located in the central areas of the city, making it convenient for nearby citizens to exercise and relax. 
"pocket parks are one of the most humanistic spatial designs of the 20th century. they have not only transformed the urban quality but also changed countless lives. since 2022, our city has been building pocket parks, with plans to complete 90 of them by 2025, incorporating functions such as ecological preservation, leisure and social interaction, children's play, sports and fitness, cultural displays, and science education," said the head of the ma'anshan municipal urban management bureau. 
in 2023, ma'anshan built 18 pocket parks in the counties and 20 in the city. the city is making solid strides toward the goal of having greenery within 300 meters and gardens within 500 meters, leading to a continuous increase in citizens' happiness index. in 2024, ma'anshan plans to construct 36 pocket parks. additionally, it will further integrate projects such as sponge city construction, revitalization of old residential areas, urban renewal, and ecological governance. it will strengthen greenway planning and construction, organically connecting various pocket parks, forming a complete urban pocket park system, and striving to fulfill the beautiful vision of citizens being able to "see green when opening the window, encounter gardens when stepping out, and witness beauty at every corner."
