on november 13th, a group of eurasian spoonbills was spotted at the huatang river wetland park in chaohu peninsula, anhui province. they gracefully flew and foraged on the water surface of the wetland park. according to the park staff, more than 20 eurasian spoonbills were observed this time, marking the largest number of eurasian spoonbills ever recorded in the huatang river wetland park. eurasian spoonbills have pure white feathers, with slender and agile necks, and exhibit a charming and elegant appearance. they are known as 'beauty among the flying birds' and are also referred to as 'pipa spoonbills' due to their beak resembling a pipa, a chinese musical instrument. eurasian spoonbills are classified as a second-level protected species in china and belong to the large wading birds. they have an average length of about 80 centimeters and often inhabit marshes, riverbanks, and reed ponds. they feed on small aquatic animals and occasionally consume aquatic plants. during flight, they extend their necks and legs, alternating between flapping their wings and gliding. in recent years, the chaohu peninsula wetland has become a migration rest stop and winter habitat for numerous water birds. during the winter season, flocks of wild migratory birds such as ducks, black-headed gulls, herons, sandpipers, and oriental white storks gather here for feeding and play.
